Abstract

Barnardos welcomes the opportunity to submit a submission in response to the Government proposals for supporting lone parents. Overall the proposals are to be recommended as they aim to tackle issues of intergenerational poverty and welfare dependency. The extent of poverty amongst lone parent households (31% in comparison to a national average of 6.8%) is a matter of serious concern. A particular welcome development is that the proposals are family form neutral – applicable to all parents regardless of whether parents are single, living together or married.
