Abstract

On September 19, 2002 Barnardo's Northern Ireland, Barnardos Ireland, Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) hosted a conference in Dundalk entitled 'Beyond Borders - Protecting Children on the Island of Ireland'. For the organisers of this conference this was a very significant event, marking as it did the first time that the four organisations had come together to work on an issue that affected children across the island of Ireland. All four organisations share a concern that children on the island of Ireland should be afforded the highest standards of protection from harm .All of the organisations had been previously involved in lobbying to effect change and promote effective systems to safeguard children.
