Abstract

Despite the family’s central role in Irish society and its constitutional status, there has been limited detailed study of family life in Ireland. Barnardos, recognising the importance of supporting families to promote children’s well-being, has long provided a range of family support services, particularly for the most vulnerable. All families experience pressures—often during major transitions or crises—and some require more support than others, especially if isolated from extended family. Barnardos believes most parents want to provide nurturing environments for their children, but many face significant obstacles. Effective support must reflect the diverse realities of family life, as “one size fits all” policies are inadequate. Recent debates on family policy have often sidelined children’s needs, focusing more on employment and gender issues, and have become ideologically polarised. Barnardos aims to centre children in policy discussions and address the broad range of pressures—economic, social, and infrastructural—that affect families. The growing problem of “time poverty” threatens both parents and children, and only a comprehensive, integrated public policy approach can ensure families are properly supported, celebrated, and empowered to nurture future generations.
