Abstract
As preparations are under way for the re-opening of early learning and care (ELC) settings under Covid-19 guidelines, it is important that we recognise the emotional impact the return to settings will have for young children. As an early childhood educator, you will need to be thoroughly prepared to ensure that the transition process begins as early as possible and that it continues as long as is needed. Careful consideration of the transition process will make a big difference to children’s experiences. When not well managed, transitions can cause emotional distress in children, which can have lasting impacts if not responded to appropriately. When children and families are adequately supported during this settling-in time, it sets the scene for a positive experience of such a significant life change. This guide provides information for early childhood educators to support children’s emotional well-being as they transition into your early learning and care setting, whether they are returning after a long break or attending for the first time.
