Abstract
Barnardos welcomes the opportunity to feed into the review of the Mental Health Act 2001. Barnardos believes that there is an urgent need to revise this Act in the interests of adhering to international best practice and human rights laws, particularly the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The reform of the Mental Health Act 2001 along with the proposed revision of the 1871 Lunacy Ireland Regulation Act should be followed by the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which Ireland signed in 2007.
