AbstractIreland’s population has grown rapidly with the CSO findings showing that in Census 2011,
the population is 4,581,269 an increase of 8% on Census 2006. Approximately, one quarter
of the Irish population are under-18 and Ireland has a higher percentage of children under-
18 than any other EU member state. Ireland’s birth-rate is also the highest across the EU
and the baby boom is continuing with 363,500 babies born between 2006 – 2011.
