Item Children and Equality(Barnardos, 2011) Gibbons, NorahIreland’s population has grown rapidly with the CSO findings showing that in Census 2011, the population is 4,581,269 an increase of 8% on Census 2006. Approximately, one quarter of the Irish population are under-18 and Ireland has a higher percentage of children under- 18 than any other EU member state. Ireland’s birth-rate is also the highest across the EU and the baby boom is continuing with 363,500 babies born between 2006 – 2011.Item Prioritising Children in Policy and Practice(Barnardos, 2011) Gibbons, NorahAs Chair of Alcohol Action Ireland, this topic is one we have been actively working on for the last three years. Alcohol Action Ireland are very happy to work in partnership with other organisations where we can coalesce around issues of mutual interest. I would like to congratulate the National Advisory Committee on Drugs on taking the initiative to bring the HSE and Alcohol Action Ireland together for this conference. From an advocacy perspective, building “credible voices” on any issues with the same message is of key importance.Item Why Gender Matters in Child Welfare and Protection(Barnardos, 2011) Gibbons, NorahOne quarter of the population of Ireland are children and young people aged 18 and under, over 1,107,034 and Ireland has a higher proportion of children and young people under 18 than any other EU member state. In 2009 the last year for which figures have been published 91,954 children were living in consistent poverty in Ireland an increase of 26,684 on 2008 figures. In Ireland today there are 6,122 children in care (April 2011). We have more than 12,000 that are known to the care system – that is, where an expression of concern has been made to the HSE about their wellbeing. Those figures are not presented broken down into gender but it would be interesting to have them in that format. Children in residential care inspected by HIQA show that boys were more likely to be in residential care than girls. We know there are many other children where there are concerns held by family members and/or professionals but have not as yet been communicated to the HSE.Item Presentation to Campaign for Children and Children’s Right Alliance Seminar Children’s Rights and Child Protection in the Irish Context(Barnardos, 2012) BarnardosBarnardos is celebrating 50 years working with children and families in Ireland this year and we have long called for greater recognition of children’s rights and improved frameworks and systems for the realisation of an enhanced child welfare and protection system as part of this.Item Plugged in Switched Off 2022(Barnardos, 2022) BarnardosDue to the success of Plugged In Switched Off in 2021, the conference returned this May.
