    In this issue of Childcare eNews, we bring you details of the Barnardos School Costs Survey, which found that many parents are struggling to cover the costs of their child's return to school. We also share the latest findings from both the Growing Up In Ireland study, which focuses on mothers returning to work and childcare choices for infants, and the evaluation of the Pre-School Education Initiative for Children from Minority Groups, which will assist in the implementation of a diversity and inclusion plan for the early years sector in the coming years.

    The early years sector is under intense focus following on from the findings of the RTE Prime Time investigation A Breach of Trust into practices at crèches. This has created great concern for both parents and staff in early childhood care and education settings. We bring you an update of the response of the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs to this, including the plans to increase the required qualification standards of early years staff. We also bring you details of the launch of the Association of Childhood Professionals which represents 22,500 childcare professionals across the country as well as other news and developments.

We share news of a joint initiative by the Ombudsman for Children and Courts Service to assist separating parents and their children as well as showing the results of a survey into childcare in Ireland. We also welcome the appointment by Frances Fitzgerald TD, Minister for Children & Youth Affairs of Ms. Norah Gibbons as the first Chairperson of the board of the new Child & Family Agency.

There is also information on a new website from NALA, wwwhelpmykidlearn.ie, which helps parents to support their children’s literacy and numeracy development as well as news of the Government’s new Action Plan on Bullying and findings on a UCD study on Family Relationships and Family Well-being.
